Stippling Brush Incident
(kinda similar to the white eyeliner incident I had in Singapore.. in a very twisted funny way)
So the other day I was doing my make up in a dark-ish room.
I was using a foundation brush which looks like this:

So anyway, I thought the foundation looked really nice especially under that dimmed light setting with my newly bought expensive foundation (blog a review about that soon!). So I walked into the well lit bathroom (just cause I hate applying make up in the bathroom) to check out my final make up and I was HORRIFIED.
My skin looked dry and flaky… the foundation wasn’t set properly and it was very streaky.
I looked at my newly bought expensive foundation and sighed. But I was convinced that this new foundation is not the cause of the streak marks.
It was the foundation brush.
How do I know? Don’t ask me why I know. But I just do.
Anyway, I had to blame my skin for being so dry due to the change in weather too.
So on the spot, I have decided that it is time to purchase to new brush. Not a foundation brush, but a stippling brush.
Many MAY ask, what is a stippling brush?
Funny thing is, not alot of people know. Which is surprising. But that’s the next part of the story. But here’s a picture of how a stippling brush looks like…

Of course, you may do more research if you like to understand what is truly means to own one of those babies up there. Mind you, a MAC 187 stippling brush cost about $85.
… which is the thing I have been troubling about for the past week or so after that streak-mark-with-foundation-brush incident.
So ANYWAY, I searched a few websites and did some research on which brand of stippling brush would be worth investing on. I wasn’t happy with the fact that there was none that really fit into the category. But then again, who says life was always that perfect.
The next thing I did was went physically searching for some stippling brushes. So I stopped by carousel one day after uni to have a quick look around.
I went to The Body Shop.

I wasn’t surprised that I didn’t see a stippling brush on their demonstration counter as they have a very small range of brushes available. But I wanted to try my luck so I asked one of the lady working there…
Lady: Hi, how can I help you? *smiles*
Me: Hi, hmm I was wondering if you guys sell the stippling brush?
Lady: A what? Sipping brush?
Me: Nono.. a s-tipp-ling brush.
Lady: Hmmm.. no, I don’t know what you’re talking about…
Me: Ok, don’t worry.
So, I guess they really don’t have any stippling brush. I was even more surprised by the fact that their staff are so under-trained? But oh well, I really couldn’t expect much after looking at how that lady put on foundation and bronzer on my sister, Cath, who was accompanying me that day.
So, I moved on to Myer’s who has some of department store brands (minus MAC! I don’t understand why a huge shopping centre like carousel do not have MAC or Bobbi Brown! How depressing…) such as Shiseido, Clinique, Dior etc etc.
I actually missed all the those department store brands and went over to the Artiste shelf first to find the stippling brush. Unfortunately, it seemed to be sold out. Again, I tried my luck at Clinique.
Me: Hi, do you guys sell the stippling brush?
Lady: Sorry, what?
Me: The stippling brush?
(Ok, why does this sound so familiar all of the sudden?)
Lady: Hmmm, sorry I don’t know what you’re talking about.
*lady shakes head in disbelief as if I was talking to her in jubbish*
*lady turns to another lady*
Lady: Do you know what she’s looking for?
Lady 2: *who was clearly eavesdropping* hmmm, no I’ve never heard of it.
Me: Hmmm, I’ll show you.
*Me pointing to the direction to the Artiste shelf*
*Walks over to Artiste shelf and points at the picture of the stippling brush*
Lady: Ohh.. no isn’t it on the shelf?
Me: Nope, I’ve checked. Artiste seem to have ran out.
Lady 2: It’s probably all gone, what issit for anyway?
Me: Hmmmmm… to put foundation on the face?! Nvm, I’ll look somewhere else.
So, no stippling brush and feeling like a weirdo walking out of Myers.
I moved on again, to Napoleon Set, which is a specialise make up store.

Similar situation.
Me: Hi, do you guys sell the stippling brush?
Lady: Sorry what?
*points at the stippling brushes which is clearly sitting on the table*
Me: This, the stippling brush.
Lady: Oh, you mean the foundation brush?
Me: Errrr.. never mind. Do you sell this?
Lady: Yer, for $59.95
Me: Okay, thanks.
Hello? What kind of make up artist/counter girl doesn’t know the proper name for a make up brush?!
So so so disappointed. I have to say, not just disappointed at the fact that most of these girls who works at places like that not only doesn’t know much about make up, but they also don’t have the passion for their job.
Most of the time, they just do their thing and then when we are hesitating on whether that product is gonna burn a hole in our pockets or not, they just simply say “ohh that’s a beautiful colour”. Which probably isn’t really what they want to say from the bottom of their hearts.
I went home empty handed that day which made me quite relief. Because I wasn’t planning to spend money on something that I couldn’t get enough information and advices on anyway.
That brings me to another question.
Am I the only one that calls it a Stippling Brush? Am I dreaming the whole time? Is this not what it is supposed to be called?
So I tested my knowledge using the oh-so-wonderful-know-it-all google.

I may have gone home empty handed by I definitely didn’t go home knowing that I am a weirdo.
At least now I can confirm that I do have a passion for make up.
Anyway, after doing more research, I did ended up buying a stippling brush from Stigma after being introduced to by Sarah who have a set of them. So if anyone is interested, do check out the website.
I’m currently waiting for mine in the mail as it got sent out yesterday.
And moral of the story?: You can’t always trust people and their “professionalism” when you’re buying make up. Just go with something you’re comfortable with. After all, you are the one spending your money and you probably know what is the best for your own skin and body anyway.
Ciao~
